Description:
Conducted in Spanish, the course introduces the principles of literary analysis, based on reading and discussion of Hispanic literary texts. Includes fiction, drama, essay, and poetry from Spain and Spanish America. (Offered every fourth semester.)
In this class, we were asked to read several stories that helped us develop a better understanding of the practices of Hispanic cultures. For example, we read “No oyes ladrar los perros” which was written by Juan Rulfo, a Mexican author. This story talks about poverty many people in Mexico have to deal with and how they have to deal with the lack of medical services. We had to pick a story and write an analytical essay to show our understanding of the cultural aspects presented in the story. I chose “No oyes ladrar los perros” because this story talks about poverty in a town that is located in Mexico, and it is significant because I lived in Mexico for 14 years. Download in PDF
In this class, we were also asked to read several poems. Some of the poems were about love, nature, and friendships, but the poems I enjoyed the most were about social issues in different parts of Latin America. We had to learn how to do an analysis of a poem and it was interesting to learn all the different components of a poem. For example, we had to write about the external and internal structure of a poem. Download in PDF Reading and writing analytical essays helped me to learn about the different ways authors use to say what they think about their own society and to express their feelings.
In this class, we were introduced to theater. We learned about the components of a theater. For example, how the actors interact with each other and how they interact with the audience. We watched a movie in class because our teacher wanted us to see this interaction between the actors. I had a great experience while taking this class because I learned a lot about Hispanic cultures. It was interesting to learn the different activities each culture has and how people interact with each other. Before this class I did not have an interest in stories about different cultures, but now I do like to read those stories because I get a deeper understanding of cultures that are different from my own culture.
There are areas that I wish to develop more because I am still not an expert on those areas. One of the areas is learning how to properly place the accent on the words that need it. I was already taught how to do it, but I need more practice because I still forget to place the accent in the correct place. Another area is learning more sophisticated words in Spanish. I already speak Spanish but I need a more formal way of communicating.
