Course description: Reading and discussion of selected masterworks of literature as they reflect the historical, political, and social context of the Peninsular Spanish experience. Students will be introduced to reading and writing critically, and discussing both form and content within these works. All discussions will be carried out in Spanish.
This class helped me to learn a lot about Spanish literature. It was interesting to learn about the life and work of different authors. This class also helped me to learn about different literary movements in the Spanish literature.
In this class, we did many activities that helped me remember all the topics that we were introduced to. One of the activities was having discussions through the class. This activity was helpful because all my classmates participated by sharing their different points of views; this way we all learned from each other. Another helpful activity was getting into small groups to share what we learned from the previous reading. It was helpful because together we had the opportunity to understand the reading even more.
At the beginning of the semester, I had an idea about what the Spanish literature was because I had previously taken SPAN 304 which is an introduction to the Spanish literature. In the SPAN 321 class I did not see the same topics only a few were repeated. In SPAN 321, I read different stories that were about love, religion, and classicism. It was interesting to read a story that was about love that parents have for their kids. The reason why it was interesting is because last semester I read a story that was about the same thing. There are two different stories, but the topic repeats which means that the authors liked to write about this type of love. The two stories I am talking about are Torquemada en la Hoguera and No Oyes Ladrar los Perros. Stories that reflect a powerful love between parents and their kids.
Having final presentations was the activity that helped me the most to expand my knowledge about Spanish literature. For this final presentation, I had to research the author’s life and read about his works. I also had to do an analysis of one of his works and prepare for questions from my classmates. It was a 20 minute presentation and I have to say that I successfully completed this assignment.
After all the final presentations, I decided that I want to research about which authors are still alive because I would like to meet them one day and interview them to see what they are doing with their lives now.
