Course description: Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail.
In this class, I had the opportunity to learn about many aspects of the Spanish language. I did not know that there were different variations of the Spanish language. For example, there is the variation that belongs to Mexico or the variation that belongs to Colombia. There are certain words that are pronounced differently which make all the variations unique. In SPAN 315, I also learned about how doing translation is so difficult because we need to pay attention to a lot of things. Every translator is unique, he/she has his/her own way of translating and it would never change. Also, when doing translation we need to be careful with how we translate every word because each culture is different and a word represents something different for each culture. When translating it is also important to maintain the same message that the author wants to communicate. We also need to pay attention to what audience the message will reach.
In this class, I did many assignments that helped me learn that doing translation is complex. I had to translate short paragraphs, long paragraphs, and a short part of a book. I also had to find the wrong way of translating some common words and then find the correct translation. In class, I had to compare Spanish and English texts to see how they change when we translate them. In SPAN 315, I had to analyze advertisements which was not easy. I had to pay attention to which audience it was intended to be for and find the Spanish variation that it consisted of. I also needed to find the linguistic technique used in each advertisement which was the most difficult task to do. I completed this assignment with a good score which made me very happy.
After taking this class, I noticed that my Spanish needs some improvement. I need to take a class in which I am taught to recognize which words need an accent and I also need to take a class in which I learn the advanced Spanish grammar.
