Approximately one year ago, I did not know what I wanted to do with my life. A few months ago, I finally decided to study Spanish because I wanted to be a Spanish teacher, but I did not know if I wanted to be an elementary teacher, high school teacher, or college teacher. I liked the idea of becoming a high school teacher but I decided not to. I got rid of that idea because during my first service learning, I had the opportunity to work with sixth grade students. They were not exactly high school students, but they gave me an idea of how working with high school students was going to be like. I do not have the patience to deal with high school students because at their age, they think that they know everything. During high school, they get crazy because they start to wonder who they are and they try to have an answer for everything. I remember that when I was a high school, I questioned everything. I always wanted to know why I needed to learn about the past or about weird concepts. I remember that during one of my classes, I did not want to pay attention because it was super boring. I was talking all the time until the teacher gave me two hours of detention. That is also the reason why I do not want to be a high school teacher because I remember how crazy I was during those years.
Last semester, I had a class in which a college level teacher gave a presentation about her life. She talked about how she became a college level teacher and the reasons she had for it. I found her story interesting and encouraging. Thanks to her presentation, I learned a little bit about the process of becoming a college level teacher and how long it takes. After her presentation, I knew that I wanted to be like her, so I started doing some research to learn more about the whole process. I still have a lot of questions, but I think I am going to find an answer once I start communicating with the Spanish department. I am 95% sure that I want to become college level teacher.
This major has helped me to improve my Spanish. I already spoke Spanish before entering to this program, but I wanted to improve it. The Spanish major has six MLOs that have the purpose to help us with different aspects of the language. The first three MLOs focus on reading, writing and listening skills, and the last three focus on technology and culture knowledge. Thanks to the first three MLOs, I learned to communicate and write in a more professional way. Thanks to the last three MLOs, I had the opportunity to learn about the Japanese and Latin American culture.
Even though I improved my writing and speaking skills, I still want to improve them even more. I know that my writing is not perfect yet, so I still need to keep working on that. Next semester, I am going to take two more classes that will help me with my writing and speaking skills. I am also going to take a culture class that will help me expand my knowledge about Latin American culture.
