As a community-based learning experience, the course provides students with career-related experience working collaboratively with community agencies to address community concerns / issues.
Spanish 301s was my service learning class, it was interesting because it was not like a normal class. It was different than a normal class because what we were taught in class was a little bit different than what we had to do for our service learning. At first I thought that we were going to be placed in a specific site, but we had to choose our own site. It was kind of difficult and stressful to find it because there were many sites to choose from, and all the sites had different requirements. I chose a school in Salinas, but they were not offering any activities from service learning students. I wanted to go to this school in Salinas because I did my first service learning there, so I wanted to work with the same kids again. Unfortunately, I could not do it and I had to find a different place. I finally found a different site and I decided that I was going to do my service learning hours there. Before doing my hours, I had to take a TB test and go to an important meeting. During this meeting, I had the opportunity to meet with the coordinator of the site I chose. She provided me with information about the site and asked me about my schedule. We also set up another meeting because I needed to complete an orientation at the site. The orientation was easy and quick. I only had to read more information about the site and the site’s rules. After I finished reading, I was asked a few questions. I successfully completed the orientation. After completing the orientation, I was ready to start my hours. Meanwhile, in class we were discussing about racism, linguistic ability, and ethnic studies, among others. I really enjoyed this class.
