Course description: Taught in Spanish, presents an historical and cultural overview of Hispanic Latin America from its pre-Columbian origins to the present through works of literature, art, music, and videos.
In my Spanish 306 class, I learned many interesting things about Latin America, specifically about how each country won their independence. Through reading and class activities, I learned about all the sacrifices they had to do to obtain their independence. For example, we talked about Mexico. I learned that Miguel Hidalgo started the independence movement with the help of other important people. Miguel Hidalgo organized people to fight; they used rocks and sticks to defend themselves. I remember that we had a discussion for this topic, which was helpful. We all shared what we knew about Mexico’s independence, and we all learned something new from listening to each other. I also learned about important Latin writers. I loved this section of the class because I had previously studied about Latin writers. In Spanish 306, I had the opportunity to read about Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz again. It was great to review her life and some of her most important works. I also learned about the life of Bernal Diaz del Castillo and Garcilaso de la Vega. One of my favorite assignments was learning all the names of the Latin American countries and their capital. For this assignment, we had to identify the location of the countries in a map; we also had to complete a map for one of our tests. In this class, I also learned about Argentina’s economy, politics, and people. It was not only just about Argentina, I learned about all Latin America countries. For example, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, among others. After taking this class, I feel an interest in learning more about Latin America. I want to know more about their culture and how they are doing right now. Next semester, I am going to take a class about Mexico’s history. I am pretty sure this class will be interesting just like Spanish 306. I was born in Mexico and reviewing Mexico’s history makes me excited.
